How We Research

Home/How We Research

Merry Lights Guide ranks Christmas lights, trees and decorations by analyzing thousands of real owner reviews and expert consensus. We do not buy, install or physically test the products we cover — every ranking on this site comes from aggregated data, not a personal opinion.

Affiliate Disclosure

Some links on this page are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases — at no extra cost to you. We do not buy, install, or physically handle the lights and decorations we cover; our rankings come from aggregated owner feedback and expert consensus, not first-hand testing. Commissions never change our verdicts. How we research · full disclosure.

Our 4-Step Research Routine

1. Gather The Reviews

We pull together owner reviews and expert write-ups from across the web for every product in a category.

2. Read & Analyze

We work through what buyers consistently report after a season outdoors or several years in the attic — not a single glowing (or scathing) review.

3. Weigh & Value

Weatherproofing, bulb life, brightness, ease of installation and price against rivals, scored on a consistent scale across the whole category.

4. Verdict & Score

A clear recommendation with who it is for and who should skip it — and we say so plainly when a popular product underperforms in the reviews.

Prices & Availability

Live prices and stock status come straight from Amazon's own Creators API and refresh every few hours, each shown with the date and time they were last checked. We do not display numeric star ratings or review counts — Amazon no longer provides that data through its API, so rather than guess or scrape it, we leave it off and let our editorial verdicts and the live Amazon listing speak for themselves. See our affiliate disclosure for how this connects to our revenue.

What We Will Never Do

A Note On Safety

Christmas lights and decorations are an electrical product category. Where a page covers installation, extension cords, or roof/ladder work, we include a dedicated safety callout summarizing common manufacturer guidance (UL listing, indoor-vs-outdoor rating, extension-cord amperage) — this is a trust and safety aid, not a certification or a substitute for the manufacturer's own instructions. See our disclaimer for the full framing.
