LED Christmas lights use about 4 to 6 watts per 100 mini bulbs — roughly a tenth of the ~40 watts an equivalent incandescent strand draws. Larger LED C7 and C9 bulbs use a little more, around 7 to 10 watts per 100, but still a fraction of their incandescent counterparts. Because the wattage is so low, even a big LED display often totals less power than a single old-fashioned light bulb.

Adding up a full display
Your total wattage is simply the sum of every strand you run. Because LED numbers are so small, the totals stay low even for a generous display. A 1,000-bulb LED mini display draws roughly 40 to 60 watts — about the same as one incandescent bulb of old. Scale that to a large 5,000-bulb LED display and you're still around 200 to 300 watts, where the incandescent version would draw a couple of thousand.

Where to find the wattage
You never have to guess. The wattage is printed on the product box and on the small tag molded onto the plug or clipped to the wire. Why low wattage lets you connect more strands
The wattage of a strand also decides how many you can link end-to-end. Every set lists a maximum number of connected sets on the plug, and that limit exists because the first plug in a series carries the current for the whole chain. Low-wattage LED strands leave far more headroom, so you can connect many more of them in a run than heavy-draw incandescent strands — often 40 or more LED sets versus only 3 to 5 incandescent. - Mini LEDs sip power. Around 4 to 6 watts per 100 bulbs.
- C7 and C9 LEDs draw a bit more. Still only 7 to 10 watts per 100, versus hundreds for incandescent.
- Whole displays stay small. A 1,000-bulb LED display is roughly one old light bulb's worth of power.

Mini, C6, C7 and C9 LED wattage compared
Bulb size sets the wattage. Mini lights sip the least. An LED mini strand draws 4 to 6 watts per 100 bulbs. A C6 LED is a little more, around 5 to 7 watts. A C7 LED runs 7 to 8 watts per 100. A C9 LED is the biggest at 8 to 10 watts.
Every one of those is a fraction of its incandescent twin. An incandescent C9 can pull 500 watts or more per 100. So the bulb type you pick decides both the look and the load.
