How many LED Christmas lights on one circuit? Start with amps, volts and the 80% rule
Every household circuit is protected by a breaker rated in amps. To find its safe continuous load, multiply the voltage by the amperage, then take 80% — electrical code limits a continuously running load (anything on more than three hours) to 80% of the breaker rating. A 15-amp circuit gives 120 × 15 = 1,800 watts, and 80% of that is 1,440 watts. A 20-amp circuit gives 1,920 watts of safe load. That watt figure is your true ceiling.

The real limit: the end-to-end connection cap
Here is the catch that trips up most people. Long before you approach 1,440 watts, you hit the manufacturer's maximum connected sets. Each string's wire gauge can only carry the current for a limited number of strands daisy-chained after it. LED mini sets typically allow around 40 to 50 sets in one continuous run; incandescent sets usually allow only 3 to 5. Exceeding that cap overloads the thin lead wire in the first strand — it does not necessarily trip the breaker, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. Always read the maximum connected sets printed on the plug tag.

An incandescent mini-light strand pulls roughly ten times the power of the LED equivalent because incandescent bulbs waste most of their energy as heat. That single fact explains why LED sets allow far longer end-to-end runs and far more total lights per circuit. How to plan a display across circuits
Add up the wattage of every set you plan to run, using the figure on each box. Keep each circuit's total under its 80% safe number, and keep each series run under the connection cap. A practical approach for a full-house display:
- Map your outlets to breakers. Two exterior outlets are often on the same circuit, so check the panel before you assume they are separate.
- Give the display its own dedicated circuit if you can. A dedicated circuit keeps a garage freezer or heater from tripping the breaker mid-December.
