Every accurate estimate starts with a tape measure and a walk around the house. Write each run down. Rooflines on a single-story home usually total 100 to 150 feet, and two-story homes often reach 150 to 250 feet. For a roofline, buy roughly the measured length in feet of lights and add 10 to 15 percent for corners and slack. Tree light counts scale with height, so measure each tree before you buy. Big C9 bulbs on wider spacing use fewer bulbs than a dense mini-light wrap. Trees are where light counts climb fast. A dense full wrap of the trunk and main branches uses roughly 100 lights per vertical foot of tree, so a 6-foot tree needs about 600 lights and a large 15-foot tree can need 1,500 or more. Total your roofline, trees, bushes, and accent runs, then add about 15 percent overall for slack, corners, and the odd faulty section. It is always better to have one spare set than to run short with the ladder already up. Round up to whole strands, and prefer long connectable runs over many short sets so you have fewer plugs to hide. Once you know the count, check the power side. Every strand prints a maximum number of connected strings or a total wattage; exceeding it overloads the first run and can trip a breaker or start a fire.
